This weeks walks (week beginning 24th November)

Dear friends,

we had a busy week of Mindful walks last week and this week starting Monday 24th November we will have plenty more opportunities to practice Mindfulness outdoors in Nature. Together we practice walking meditation, mindfulness of walking, aware of our steps. Slow, solid and stable, in touch with the earth, in touch with our body, in touch with our breath.

On the morning of Monday 24th November at 10am we will meet at the bottom of the FREE car park at Cutters Wharf, Loughview Road, Stranmillis (closest end  of the car park to the river Lagan). We will walk together in mindfulness and enjoy  a circular route along the riverside pathway and open meadows with ancient oak trees. This is a beautiful walk which will take approx’ 2 hour. Wear sturdy footwear and dress for the outdoors and winter weather.

When we practice Mindful Walking we are meditating together. We walk slowly as a group, following our guide. We choose to walk in silence. The silence can be nourishing. We come back to our bodies, our footsteps, our breath and we smile. Smiling to each other, smiling to the river, smiling to the birdsong, smiling to Mother Earth.

See the details of the walk below.

On Tuesday 25th November at 10am we will walk in the beautiful Orangefield Park. The Park has had lots of development work carried out including rerouting the Knock River so that it runs through the park. There are lovely pathways and wild flower plantings to enjoy. We’ll meet at the Dunraven Park entrance.

On Wednesday 26th we have our weekly lunch time walk in Botanic Gardens. You are invited to join us for a shorter walk over lunchtime in the beautiful Belfast Botanic Gardens. We will enjoy walking solidly, in the present moment and enjoy the seasons changing. We will meet at 1pm in front of the Palm House and hope to enjoy the cool breeze, the birds singing and hopefully the blue skies and sunshine again!

Then on Thursday 27th we’re back at Belfast Castle for a wonderful walk in the beautiful Castle gardens. We’ll meet at 10:30am (meeting in Belfast Castle car park on the left, at the top of the castle driveway).

A very special Mindful Walk for National Grieving Day-Saturday November 22nd

“As a country we need to grieve before we can truly move on” says Lydia Kiernan, founder of National Grieving Day which is taking place in Ireland North and South and around the world on Saturday, the 22nd of November. The Day incorporates Ireland’s rich heritage around grieving with events across the country, including keening sessions and silent walks, giving people an opportunity to sit with and move through their hurt, loss and grief towards celebration, hope and light. National Grieving Day hosts community gatherings for people to navigate the discomfort and uncertainty of grief, so that they can more fully and freely move forward through life’s events.”

Mindful Walks Belfast will be offering a special facilitated Mindful Walk for National Grieving Day.

“When you walk for whom do you walk? You can walk to get somewhere but you can also walk as a kind of meditative offering. It’s very nice to walk for your parents and grandparents who may not have known the practice of walking in mindfulness. All our ancestors and all future generations are present in us. If we can take one step freely and mindfully touching the earth in mindfulness we can take one hundred. We take our steps mindfully for ourselves and all our ancestors and all the future generations.

When you take a step you may visualise that your Mother, your Father, your child is taking that step with As we practice looking deeply we the presence of our Mother, our Father, our children in every cell of our body. Our body is also a continuation our Mother’s Body, our Fathers body, our Grandparents body. When you make a step you can say ‘Mother walk with me” and suddenly you feel your Mother in you walking with you. You may notice that during her lifetime she did not have much opportunity to walk in the here and now and to enjoy touching the earth like you. Suddenly compassion, love is born and that is because you see your Mother walking with you -not as something imagined but as a reality.

Walking Mindfully you may like to invite the people you love whether they are still alive or have passed on to walk with you in the here and now. You can invite them and walk with them without the need for them to be physically present.” Thich Nhat Hanh

The walk is at 2.30pm on Saturday 22nd November in Ormeau Park, meeting at the main gate by the Ormeau Bridge.

This event like all Mindful Walks are free.
